Every holiday has its traditions. Most of them seem to stem out of some twisted birth-child conceived by the incorporation of pagan holidays into Christian theology. This red-headed step-child has brought us a plethora of wonderful ideas such as painting and hiding eggs to celebrate the resurrection (if that doesn't make sense to you, don't worry, there's a bunny), and cutting down a tree to turn it into a giant fire hazard in our living room to celebrate Christ's birth. Halloween, however, is a different animal all together.
Apparently, carving pumpkins goes back hundreds of years to a Celtic holiday and the Celts believed that hollowed out vegetables lit within would keep away evil spirits. That must be what's missing from all the good ghost movies. I mean, seriously, if you want to stay alive, just carry around your crappy jack o' lantern and the ghosties will leave you alone. I'm not sure what makes these things scary enough to frighten off a ghost, maybe because the hollowing out process is just plain disgusting. Anyhoo, here is our pumpkin for the year. Yes, we got lazy this year, deal with it!
